Mayor Bryant opened the workshop at 5:30 p.m. and introduced Dr. Scott Paine.
1. Speaker-Dr. Scott Paine, Florida League of Cities
Dr. Paine spoke about effective commission and council techniques. He spoke about the way public office lives may be different than our private lives. He addressed different personality types, each with strengths and weaknesses, but ultimately, the goal is to accomplish good things. Presentation and discussions continued regarding issues such as the role as a public official, running an effective meeting, and managing public participation. Dr. Paine talked about the roles of key staff positions and referred to the value of the press, and the value of employees.
He quoted “politics is the art of the possible.” Board members were chosen to get things done. He encouraged the listeners to do what you can do. Don’t get stuck on the things you cannot do. He finished by asking to remember why you chose to enter public service.
Dr. Paine ended his presentation at 7:33 p.m.
